First Visit

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule my first visit?

You can schedule online at any time through our online booking system, or call (732) 972-6010 during office hours. Same-day appointments are usually available for acute issues. If it's your first visit, budget 45–60 minutes for a full evaluation before treatment begins.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring a government-issued photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any recent imaging (MRI, X-ray, CT) or reports you have. If you're coming in for an auto-accident or workers' comp case, also bring your claim number, adjuster contact, and any paperwork your attorney has provided. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.

What happens during a first visit?

Your first visit is a full evaluation, not a sales pitch. We go through your history, perform a physical and neurological exam, assess movement and posture, review any imaging you bring, and explain exactly what's driving your pain. You'll leave with a clear treatment plan (expected number of visits, estimated cost, and the specific modalities involved). In most cases, we also start treatment on the same day.

Do I need a referral from my primary-care doctor?

Not in New Jersey. Chiropractic and most physical therapy care can be accessed directly — no referral needed. For certain insurance plans, a referral may reduce your out-of-pocket cost; we can check your benefits before you come in.

Insurance & Cost

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans, including Horizon BCBSNJ, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and many more. Call us with your member ID and we'll verify your coverage before your first visit — no surprises at the front desk.

What if I don't have insurance, or my plan doesn't cover chiropractic?

We offer transparent self-pay pricing and flexible packages for cash-pay patients. A typical self-pay adjustment runs less than a specialist co-pay on most commercial plans. We'll walk you through options during your first visit so you know exactly what each visit costs.

Do you bill for auto injury (PIP) and workers' compensation?

Yes. We handle NJ Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and workers' comp billing routinely, so your care typically comes with no out-of-pocket cost. Our admin team coordinates directly with insurance adjusters and attorneys. See our auto injury & workers' comp page for details.

Treatment & Approach

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chiropractic care safe?

Yes — performed by a licensed chiropractor, spinal adjustments are among the safest musculoskeletal treatments in medicine. Dr. Rick Caban uses both manual and instrument-assisted techniques and adjusts his approach to your comfort level and condition. Serious adverse events are exceedingly rare and we screen carefully for contraindications.

Does chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Most patients describe it as a quick pressure followed by immediate relief. You might feel a 'pop' — that's a gas release inside the joint, not anything painful. Some soreness the next day (similar to after a workout) is common for the first few visits, especially if your muscles have been in a guard pattern for a long time.

How many visits will I need?

Depends on the condition. Acute cases (a fresh strain, recent fall) often resolve in 4–8 visits over 2–4 weeks. Chronic cases or structural issues (a long-standing disc herniation, sciatica with nerve involvement, post-surgical recovery) may take 8–16 visits over 2–3 months. We'll give you a realistic estimate at the end of your first visit — and if we're ahead of schedule, we graduate you early.

What's the difference between chiropractic and physical therapy?

Chiropractic focuses on restoring joint motion and reducing nerve irritation through adjustments and manual therapy. Physical therapy focuses on rebuilding the muscular support, movement patterns, and strength that keep joints stable over time. Most musculoskeletal conditions respond best to both — which is why we combine them on one plan.

Can you treat conditions that other offices haven't been able to fix?

We see a lot of patients who've been to other chiropractors, PTs, or pain-management specialists without lasting results — and often the issue is that each modality was working in isolation. Our integrated approach means chiropractic, PT, and acupuncture all operate on the same plan. For structural cases that need surgery or injections, we also have a trusted local referral network.
